2025 Vermont Bicycle Mechanic Training for Retail Service

Co-hosted by the Vermont Outdoor Business Alliance and a Vermont bike shop collaboration.

Locations: Old Spokes Home, Outdoor Gear Exchange, and Skirack, Burlington

Course Deposit: $200, refunded after training completion with full attendance

Do you currently work in retail service or are you considering employment this spring as an entry-level mechanic?

This 10-hour training provides a full overview of bicycle mechanic fundamentals rooted in the Park Tool School curriculum modified for Vermont-specific service. Learning covers a range of assembly, repair, and maintenance topics combining instruction from experienced Vermont bicycle shop mechanics with hands-on practice.

Training Modules:

  • Bike Anatomy, Common Bicycle Standards, and Tube/Tire Change Procedure
  • Set-Up and Adjustment of Common Front and Rear Derailleurs
  • Set-up and Adjustment of Caliper Rim and Mechanical Disc Brakes
  • Wheel Truing and Hub Bearing Adjustment, Headset + Bottom Bracket Bearings
  • Service Writing Overview, Shop Workflow, and Final Evaluation

The training is organized by the Vermont Outdoor Business Alliance and funded by an Economic Development Administration - Travel, Tourism and Outdoor Recreation grant through the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing. The curriculum is designed and instructed by regional cohorts of Vermont bike shops.

  • Must attend all 5 sessions and pass the final evaluation to receive the VOBA Bicycle Mechanic Training for Retail Service Certificate of Completion
  • Session times and locations vary (see above)
  • Class size: 6-8; Instructor to student ratio: 3:1
  • Training deposit will be refunded will full attendance

  • Apply by February 26 at 12pm EST
  • Confirmation of acceptance will be emailed February 28 by 12pm EST

 

Eligibility:

  • Priority will be given to those currently employed by a Vermont retailer or those planning to apply for a mechanic position in a Vermont retailer this spring
  • Priority will be given to under-represented communities in mechanic occupations in Vermont (women, BIPOC, LGBTQ, New Americans, persons with disabilities, etc.)
