Addison County Regional Housing Survey Data Summary & Analysis

The Addison County Regional Planning Commission (ACRPC) conducted the Addison County Regional Housing Survey in the summer of 2023 and has recently released a data summary and analysis of the responses collected. You can see the full survey results here (pdf file) but here are some highlights:

The survey was implemented as part of the ACRPC Housing Committee’s work “identifying critical housing concerns specific to the Addison County Region.” The survey’s focus included housing availability and affordability, and the region’s perception of housing issues.

Survey questions collected demographic, behavioral, and psychographic data, including information regarding how long residents have lived in their homes, how far they commute to work/school/childcare/daily services, and whether respondents would like to see more housing options in their village centers.

Key findings include:

  • 79% of respondents live in single family homes.
  • 83.6% believe there is a housing shortage in their community.
  • 78.6% would like to see more housing options in their village centers.
  • Reliable internet service, proximity to amenities, availability of water & sewer systems, and being close to family and friends are top priorities for respondents when choosing a place to live.
  • Lack of available housing options and the cost of housing are considered issues that most negatively affect local communities, and respondents agree there is need for more housing of all types in the region.
  • 41% of respondents spend more than 1/3 of their household income on housing costs.

The survey also includes information and feedback regarding attitudes toward Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), senior housing, and location preferences.

ACRPC encourages everyone to share these survey results and to support awareness and outreach efforts regarding housing challenges in the region.
