Creating a Maker Space for Addison County

Posted on 5/10/2018 by Fred Kenney

For several months, the Addison County Economic Development Corporation (ACEDC) has been part of a steering committee to establish a Maker Space in Addison County.
We are excited to announce that plans are underway to establish "The Makery" at the Hannaford Career Center (HCC) in Middlebury.  The vision of The Makery is a place where people imagine, experiment, network, collaborate, and create for personal & professional growth.  The mission of The Makery is to engage the greater community in pursuits related to occupations, hobbies, or crafts that grow the technical and creative economy of Vermont. The Makery will be available to makers of all ages and abilities from the greater Middlebury region.
To realize this vision, HCC has started a capital campaign.  The initial funding opportunity is a $25,000-$100,000 grant through the Gannett Foundation. To be eligible for consideration for the grant, HCC must crowdfund $6,000 from the community. ACEDC is proud to announce a challenge contribution of $1,000 to that effort if $5,000 or more is raised. We challenge others in the community to make a contribution to help jump start The Makery.  The deadline for the crowd funding is Friday, May 11, 2018. So please contribute today at If HCC's proposal is not selected by Gannett, the crowd-sourced funds will still go to support The Makery.

The Makery also secured a $30,000 grant from ACEDC member Middlebury College’s Fund for Innovation which will help support the organization with staffing from interns and mentors.

The Hannaford Career Center is excited to share this effort to re-imagine their school as a community center for the 21st century! For more information, contact Kate LaRiviere, Community Outreach Coordinator at 802-382-1063 or by email at
