Addison County Economic Development Corporation (ACEDC) member Vermont Integrated Architecture (VIA) was retained by fellow ACEDC member Middlebury Natural Foods Co-op (MNFC) for their expansion project. This plan will increase retail space by 50% and expand storage & support spaces in the store without increasing the store’s energy consumption.
The bulk of the co-op’s expansion will be to the west, with slight expansions to the north and east. Customers will notice a larger grocery area with wider aisles and more shelving, as the current refrigerated and frozen sections will shift west. The deli area, deli kitchen, and produce area will enjoy more space as well. The expansion design also features more backroom storage and a brand new meat prep area. New energy efficiency measures include simple strategies like air lock vestibules and high-performance insulation, and more complicated systems like air-source heat pumps and energy recovery ventilation.
Design work should be complete in late December 2016 with construction expected to begin in March 2017. The store will be open as usual throughout construction.
